How to: ‘Bandaging a Swollen Hock Joint

Occasionally a horse or pony will sustain an injury to the hock joint. If the hock joint is swollen, then an ice pack or poultice may be warranted to help reduce the swelling. It
is extremely difficult to wrap a swollen hock joint with a conventional elastic or fabric bandage and keep it in place, especially when it is heavy with ice or a wet clay poultice.

A ‘hugging’ baby or toddler’s nappy with elastic leg holes and selfadhesive belly band makes an ideal hock bandage which will stay in place even
as the horse walks around.

Simply place one leg hole over the point of the hock, the other over the bony protrusion on the
inside of the hock to hold the nappy in place and then tighten the elastic belly band to stick to itself comfortably over the outside of the hock. It can be reused on the horse’s hock.
