Avoid Energy Drain in Cold Weather
If you have a young horse which has recently been weaned or
a retired aged horse, providing a shelter and 2 hard feeds each day will
help ensure that the animal avoids a setback due to energy drain as a result
of heat loss in cold wintery conditions.
A horse can actually become
colder if an un-lined rug is used, even if it is waterproof and windproof.
This is because the air trapped in the hair is squeezed out by the weight
of the rug, allowing the natural insulation afforded by the trapped air to
be reduced. Always provide your horse with an insulated rug to
help reduce the heat loss through the rug when a horse is
confined in an outside yard or a paddock.
